I took some time off this week and we went to the park on Monday and the zoo on Tuesday. I’ve never taken her to the zoo, and she hasn’t been with Sean since she was pretty little so we were excited. I didn’t get too many picture with the animals, most of them freaked her out except for the birds (until one landed on her seed stick in the parakeet enclosure) and fish. Today though she said she like them all, which as you can tell from the alligator picture was not at all true yesterday.

Colorado Vacation

Last week Carys took her first trip without mom or dad. She went to Colorado with Grandma and Grandpa Koehn while I was in San Diego at our partner event. They stayed with my mom's best friend Barb and her family. Barb's daughter Kelly got a horse last month for her birthday and Carys was really excited to visit the horses. They also went up to Craig to visit Aunt BB. We can’t wait to all go for Thanksgiving.

Next week is the first day of preschool. She went to a preschool summer camp and we really like the staff and school so she’s going back there for preschool this year. She got a new fairy nap mat, a Tinker Bell backpack and a Tink lunch bag. As soon as Carys realized she could make Maddie do pretty much whatever she wanted they became best pals, much to Maddie’s dismay who is pretty tired of being chased by a shopping cart and being told to sit.

4th of July in Portland

Last week we took a trip to Portland, OR. We watched fireworks on the Willamette River on the 4th. Carys liked them but kept covering her ears because it was “Too loud!”.

She also picked up some special friends along the way. We had to stop in at Kohls to buy something and the Kohls Cares for Kids book is Winnie the Pooh. We’ve been looking everywhere for the last few months for an inexpensive Pooh. Turns out they had Eeyore and Tigger too. At $5 a piece I couldn’t complain, so she got all 3. She loved putting them all to bed for their many naps and Eeyore even went to time out a few times, although I’m not sure what he did.

We walked around the city, went to the International Test Rose Garden which was huge and took a trip to the Columbia River Gorge to see Multnomah Falls.

Better Late Than Never

Well it's been over a month since we got back from Myrtle Beach. We've been super busy deep cleaning the house and giving it a much needed paint job. Even though the flights getting there and back sucked, Carys got a fever midflight to Charleston and I got one coming back we all had a blast with Brian, Kim and baby Caroline.

This Mother’s Day Sean had to work and Carys and I went with Grandma and Grandpa Koehn and Aunt Brianna to the Fair Park Discovery Gardens to see the butterflies. She like the butterflies but didn’t want them to touch her. She also wouldn’t sit still for a picture, except with her mommy. :)

Easter Sunday

Saturday evening Carys started out in her adorbable rickrack jammies and woke up in the middle of the night burning up. It was a little warm in the house so I put her Punky Brewster jim-jams. They’re really Elmo and Abby Cadabby but they totally remind me of something Punky Brewster would wear. Anyway turns out she had a fever all night long. She woke up with a fever but still had a lot of fun hunting for the eggs which took all of 3 minutes. Next year the Easter Bunny is going to have to make the hiding places much more difficult.

Even though she was feeling fine, Carys and I skipped Easter brunch since baby Caroline was going and I didn’t want to chance getting her sick. There’s no way I could have kept Carys away from Caroline, she loves babies and wants to help with everything. We did go over to Grandma and Grandpa Koehn’s for dinner and to open her gifts which included a bunch of summer clothes, a new baby doll and princess wand that she thinks also doubles as a giant bubble blower.

Coloring Eggs

Egg decorating was much more hands on this year, mostly because Carys has to do EVERYTHING herself. We only one major spill, one melt down about how to get the eggs back out of the dye (clearly toddlers would prefer to stick their entire hand in and grab the egg) and no breakage. Sorry about the picture clarity. I finally figured out last night why all the pictures were coming out all blurry. Somebody got a hold of the camera and put their dirty little fingers on the lens.

Last week Kim and I took Caroline and Carys to the Dallas Arboretum. It was a beautiful day and we had a yummy picnic lunch. Carys had to smell all the flowers.

The horrible, over priced school pictures have begun! Carys' first day of preschool was also picture day, I had to buy a sheet of overpriced 5X7's to commemorate. For only $150 I could have gotten an 8X10, 2 sheets of 5X7, some wallets, the master disc and copyrights. What a deal. lol

We gave up on taking pictures without backup camera, Aunt Desi got plenty of photos once we got to my parents to open the rest of the presents. So, since Thanksgiving I've been sick three times, once with the flu. Carys has been sick three times, thankfully she didn't get the flu, and Sean's gotten sick twice. In between illness and work we've had family visit (Carys had lots of fun with cousins Artie and Keaton), Aunt Kim's baby shower, Carys 2nd birthday party, Aunt Desi's graduation from Texas A&M, emergency doggy dental surgery and Christmas. There hasn't been any time to do anything, let alone update a blog.
Carys had a great Christmas and got tons of toys. I, on the other hand woke up with a fever and spent the entire day on my parent's couch. Oh, and I also lost the camera days before Christmas and only found it yesterday. Good thing I held on to the old one so we've got a few pictures. I'm hoping to get those uploaded soon...

Anywho, here's a funny video of Carys and Keaton knocking each other over, classic toddler video. Of course I'm the bad mommy getting a good chuckle instead of running to the aid of my baby. They were both fine, just few tears.

This year's visit with Santa went so, so. While there weren't any tears she really didn't want to sit with him... until she saw his stuffed dog. Then he was okay but we still couldn't get her to smile. This is the best we could get.

Here are some pictures from the big night. We made it about half way around the block before she didn’t want to walk anymore. Next year we’re bringing the wagon. She wasn’t really interested in all the candy but she had to pet every dog she saw. After making the door to door rounds we grabbed our chair and headed across the street to sit with our neighbors and pass out candy.

Yesterday Sean and Carys went to the Texas State Fair. Carys worked on a farm feeding chickens, collecting eggs, watering a tree, picking peaches, milking a cow and driving a tractor. For all her hard work she was paid $1 and got to buy something from the store, she choose peanut butter crackers. She won her first stuff animal selecting a winning rubber ducky from the pond. She also got a pet and feed a bunch of animals.

Hawaii Video Overload

I finally got the chance to go through the bazillion videos from our Hawaii trip. Sorry in advance about the wind in some.

A quick video to show you some of the terrain on the Big Island.

Like I said before Carys just jumped in the water. In this video she saw a man swimming and wanted to try it too.

Here we are at the black sand beach during our drive around the island. We just stopped to stretch our legs. Lesson learned, anytime your kid is near water put their bathing suit on, especially if they're already wearing their backup change of clothes. She rode the rest of the way back in her t-shirt and Pull Up.

During the last hour and half or so of the drive Carys was done. She was really tired but wouldn’t fall asleep. There were many requests for “out” but this one was the funniest.

Hawaii 2009

Our trip to the Big Island of Hawaii over Labor Day weekend was a blast! Carys took right to the ocean this time and you couldn’t get her out. She kept her balance really well in the waves right from the get go and even tried swimming. Once again, sand was a big hit. We did A LOT of driving, including an all day trip around the island, and she did great. Only one major melt down at the end of the long island loop day that we have some funny video of that I’ll post later. Here are a few pictures from the trip. We’ve got a lot of video and once I get through looking at them all I’ll add a few clips.

A feral cat colony outside our balcony. We learned that the hotel has about 100 wild cats in several different colonies and that about 90% of them now are now fixed. The kittens get adopted out when the can find them. Every morning we had to look for the "moews" and they were by far her favorite thing at the hotel. Although, she was always a little disappointed when she would “call” (patting her hand on the ground or clapping) for them to come over to her and they wouldn’t.

The Waipi'o Valley

Once the home to many of the rulers of Hawaii.

A stop for lunch at Ken's House of Pancakes in Hilo during our unintentional trip around the island. We had only planned to go to Waimea for lunch but ended up being way too early (I had no idea it was so close to Kailua-Kona). We went on to the Waipi’o Valley but were still to early for lunch and decided to keep driving. Once you hit Hilo you’re at the halfway mark and it’s a little bit faster if you just keep going instead of turning around. Ken’s has been opened since the early 70’s and I’m sure has never seen any updating. I think our waitress had been working there since they opened. Carys is pouring coconut syrup, I think there was also mango. Sean had coconut pancakes, coconut inside, topped with coconut and served with coconut syrup. He said it's better than anything he's ever had at IHOP.

We stopped at this amazing black sand beach totally by chance. We were surprised how soft the sand is, by far the favorite beach we visited. The waves were a little rough, and I didn’t anticipate us getting in but Carys had other ideas.

In the last week or so Carys has began saying words. She’s a little late, most kids her age are already using 2 word phrases. Aunt Kim says she read that babies who walk early are often late to talk and vice versa. Until now she would only say "up" and "out" on a regular basis. The few other words she was learning she would only repeat when she felt like it. Now, she'll try to repeat most words you ask her to say and has begun to use them on her own. The other day I found her reciting the alphabet when they played it on Sesame Street. This video only shows her repeating a few of the letters but at the end she shares some of the new words she's learned overthe last week.

Summer 2009 - Cancun

Cancun was actually cooler than Texas (100 here, 90 there) and the humidity was about the same. Since it was such a short trip we mostly hung out at the hotel beach and pool and didn’t venture out of the hotel zone. Next time we definitely will though. I really like the bus, cheap, fast and you don’t have to bother with parking… Sean, not so much, but he couldn’t argue with the price. Here are a few pictures and videos.

Every hotel has it's own local vermin. Usually it's stray cats or bunnies but in Cancun it's iguanas. Every afternoon they come out to sun themselves and beg for french fries (I kid you not, they eat french fries).

It starting to gett a little hot around here and this holiday weekend we spent some time outside playing in the water. On Monday we went to Brian and Kim's for a yummy cookout. Carys loved the fresh fish and veggies.

I let Carys hold the hose to fill up her water table and she figured out how to swing the hose around for Maddie. They both loved it.

Not very entertaining videos but we did catch her saying "up" and answering a question at Brian and Kim's shindig yesterday. She can also say "da" for dada and "out" but other than that it's pretty much gibberish. She is very good about shaking her head yes or no when you ask questions and is trying to pronouce new words. She said "Mimi" the other day and I think that means Maddie.

Last night Aunt Kim and Uncle Josh went with us to a Frisco RoughRiders baseball game. The highlight of the evening was a tour of the press box. Below is a video of the room where they do the radio broadcast. I didn’t take Carys in because they were live on the air but Kim said their normal speaking voices are exactly like their radio voices. Weird.

We were off to Toys R Us last week to get Carys a water table and ran into our neighbors. Turns out they had one sitting in their garage and sold it to us for $5. Can’t beat that. Both Carys and Maddie were very excited about the new toy. It’s just the right height for Maddie to drink out of and Carys can pour water for Maddie to try and “catch”. For some reason Maddie love to chase water and try to catch it. I can’t wait till Carys learns out how to spray the hose, Maddie will be in heaven.

Sadly, Maddie decided the eggs were too good to save and while we were out at Target, our 2nd trip today, ate everything on the counter she could reach, shells and all. The weekend before last Aunt Desiree came over to finish up planting the garden and put together her homemade trellis for the melons to climb on. We had so many melons last year we didn’t know what to do with them. Carys’ favorite is a kind call a Sugar Nut.

On Saturday we went with Grandma and Grandpa Koehn and Aunt Desi on the train to Dallas to go to the Dallas Aquarium. Apparently everyone else in the metroplex decided to do this too because the line was wrapped around the building when we got there. We skipped the aquarium and went up to visit Grandpa's office downtown and then went to lunch. Sean picked us up and we headed out to Plano to visit Aunt Kim and Uncle Brian.

The weather was so beautiful yesterday that Carys got to spend the entire day outside. In the morning she had a playdate at the park with some friends and she spent the afternoon in the backyard moving rocks from one pile to another.

Carys Stats and the Latest Videos

Carys Stats

Carys weighs about 20 lbs and is 30” (2’ 5”).
Has 4 top and 4 bottom front teeth and all 4 first molars are one their way in.
Loves to brush her teeth by herself. This consists of attempting to brush, sucking the water and chewing on the brush.
We’ve recently discovered that she’s pretty good at feeding herself with a spoon even though we’ve never shown her or practiced. She must have picked it up by watching everyone eat.
Shes does really well at chewing and loves fruit. She dislikes most green veggies, spinach is the worst.
Says dada but mostly yells DA!!. According to Sean, she can say ma but thinks it’s the funny to say da when I ask her to say it.
Says Jessa, thank you, quack and meow and aaaah choooo after anyone sneezes, even if it was on tv.
Loves to dance
Love to “pat pat” and hug Tiger although we do find her kicking her occasionally. She would do the same to the dogs but they’re smart and move out of the way when they see her coming.
She doesn’t get into much trouble and even closes the pantry door for me when it’s open.
She feeds the dogs their treats every morning and evening, helps put clothes in the dryer and clean up her toys.
Can move backwards on her ride on toy but still hasn’t figured out how to go forward.
Can get in and out of her chair and just started climbing onto Grandma & Grandpa Koehn’s fireplace.
Love to take a bath and throws her bath toys, and recently items that are not bath toys, into the bath tub.
She’s drunk water from a straw cup since she was about 6 months. She knows how to use a cup but will only drink water from it. She’s slowing being convinced that she can drink milk from a cup too.
Knows how to take a long sleeve shirt off by herself and can take a disposable diaper off. She’s known for a while how to take her cloth diaper cover off but only does that now when it’s bath time.

Carys and Sean go to Monkey Business a few times a week. She has a lot of fun and is always exausted at the end of the day.

I decided to give Carys her spoon and bowl last weekend and it turns out she can use the spoon pretty well and has been feeding herself for the most since then.

When the weather's warm enough we go out for walks in the neighborhood in her wagon. She loves it when Sean goes fast.

Vegas Vacation

Here are a few pictures from our trip last week to visit our family in Las Vegas. Sean was away in Houston taking a hotel course at the University of Houston which he aced. Aunt Desi turned 21 while we were in Vegas and got to buy her first drink and play the slots. We visited Aunt Tori in the hospital and Carys finally got to meet Dori. While we were there we did some of the tourist stuff. We went to Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, saw the lions, tigers and dolphins at the Mirage, watched the pirate show at Treasure Island and the fountains at the Bellagio.

The Bellagio still had their Christmas decorations up. Spectacular!

Wow, this happened all of a sudden today, glad the camera was handy.
Then later with Aunt Desi she pulled herself up from sitting to standing
and balance for a few seconds. I think we'll have a walker pretty soon.

Grandma Koehn said today that Carys made a sort of noise that sounded like da but this (see video) is pretty much all we hear all day, everyday. Every time we put her in her activity center lately she runs around in circles "talking" (aka happily screaming). This and Maddie's barking make my eardrums hurt.

So, it turns out that our cat Tiger and Katie (former coworker who now stays home with her son Landon who is a month younger than Carys) & Neil's (current coworker) cat Cleo are pretty much twinkies. By twinkies I mean fat, baby loving gray tabbies. Here's Carys "loving" on Tiger.

Carys has started to pull herself up on things, still no crawling (unless you count army crawls). She has mastered sitting up on her own and rolls wherever she wants to go. The general consensus is that she'll probably skip crawling, but who knows.
